Home Remedies for Cough and Cold

Well, no matter how hard we try to keep ourselves healthy and free from diseases, they do come up and takes place inside our bodies. The common symptoms that tend to arise mostly inside our human system are – cold and cough. It can be mild or severe, depending upon various factors.

Though you may see cough as an irritating symptom, sometimes a person coughs to clear out the irritants and infections from the body. However, if it is persistent and doesn’t go away within a couple of days, then it may be due to an underlying cause. The condition of cold may be mild or severe in patients depending upon several factors. You can get it checked with your doctor, or you may also follow the simple home remedies for cough and cold

Our Grandma’s always had a homemade cure for any such problem that goes away with a little care. The best thing about such solutions is that you do not have to spend any extra expense, i.e., they are readily available inside your home and kitchens. Some of the popularly known treatments are as follows –

  • Honey –


Honey is an essential ingredient that’s found in most of our homes. It is an actual fact that many people use honey for coughs. But it also turns out to be a mild-blowing hack for fighting winters. You can also add a spoonful of honey into your green tea, or add a few drops of lemon and let it do wonders for your body. 

Ginger – 


Ginger has an anti-inflammatory property which can ease up dry coughs and asthmatic problems. As per the researches, ginger works for cold and cough by relaxing the membranes in the airways. Along with that, it also treats nausea and pain. You can make a nice and warm ginger tea by – adding a teaspoon of grated ginger in one cup of hot water. Let it boil and add a teaspoon of honey if you want. It can help you to get rid of the cold fast and also relieves cough.

  • Salt and water –


It is a simple but effective treatment for relieving sore throat and dry/wet cough. Salt, when added into warm water, reduces phlegm and mucus. This, in turn, lessens the need to cough and soothes your throat. All you have to do is – take a cup of warm water and add a teaspoon of salt in it, mix the solution well. After a few moments, gargle with it and repeat the same for 2 to 3 times a day.

  • Steam –

The type of cough in which a lot of mucus is developed, you can treat it with the help of proper steam. You need to take a steam bowl in which you have to place hot water. If you want, you can also add a few drops of essential oils (rosemary or eucalyptus) and herbs. Also, taking a hot bath allows you to inhale vapors, which is very good for your skin and overall health. 

  • Liquids – 


The best way to get rid of cold fast is by keeping yourself hydrated throughout the process. Taking some health fluids like hot herbal tea, health soups, and such will not only keep you fill but also elevates the process of cleaning your intestines. As you drink more and more water, it will get flush out the toxins from the body and also decrease your body temperature.

  • Thyme – 


Thyme is a common remedy, not only for the cough but also for – sore throat, digestive issues, and bronchitis. This ingredient not only has some culinary uses, but it is also popularly in demand for medicinal purposes. Some of the cough syrups that has thyme and ivy leaves used in its manufacturing are more effective in relieving cough and cold. You can also prepare it by adding two tablespoons of thyme in a cup of hot water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and then drink it after straining.

Home remedies for cough and cold in kids -:

Cold and cough are the basic symptoms that often develop in younger children. When a child is exposed to germs while playing in mud or otherwise, their immune system gets build-up while fighting them. Being a parent, you need to worry as it is beneficial for your child. You just need to give them comfort and follow these simple home remedies for cough and cold –

  • Give them fluids – It’s important for your child to have something in the form of a meal when they are not ready to eat. You can make simple and easy soups for them and if they prefer to have milk, make sure that it’s warm. It is essential for them to drink plenty of water that can help release the toxins from your body.
  • Comfort them while sleeping –  Usually, your child may face difficulty in sleeping when the symptom includes runny nose. It causes trouble in breathing, and for that, you can elevate the head of the child by putting a pillow under their head.
  • Give them honey – As already said above, honey is a natural sweetener that soothes a sore throat. It has an anti-bacterial property that fights the infection within your body. You can directly give a spoonful of honey to your child, or mix it with warm water. It also helps in hydrating the body.
  • Apply vapor rub – In cold weather, children usually fall sick, and the symptoms are cold and cough. To make them feel warm, you can apply some vapor rub on their chest at night. However, before doing so, ask your pediatrician if it will be safe for your child or not.  

Please do not try these remedies if your child is under the age of one. Talk to your doctor and only then apply to the treatments that they recommend.
